However, I love the bold look of colour against black, and I really dig embossing on a black cardstock.
I used both of the things mentioned, on the card below. Background Basics: Woodgrain stamps were clear embossed, and the sentiment from Year Of Flowers: Daffodils, white embossed on a black card.

I added the flowers from Delightful Dahlias, die cut and coloured with Copics. I wanted to have lots of texture on the flowers, hence the rather crude feathering technique used for the colouring.
For the base of the card, I used Autumn Rose cardstock.
